Letter of Invitation April 18, 2016
Subject: Augusta County Schools History Teachers Workshop, presented with The (Stonewall Brigade) Museum, 116th Infantry Regiment Foundation, Inc., July 13 and 14, 2016.
Purpose: To present an approved, no cost, Teachers’ Workshop for Augusta County History Teachers to have fun and learn about resources of the 116th Infantry Regiment Museum
Dates and Duration: The workshop will be a seven-hour curriculum sponsored by the 116th Infantry Regiment Foundation and Museum, presented on either July 13 and 14, 2016, in the Museum, located at 566 Lee Highway, Verona, VA 24482. Agenda attached.
Objective: The objective is to inform teachers about, provide access to, and facilitate use of resources from the 116th Infantry Regiment Museum and to support SOL based learning during the 2017 School Year. The Regiment’s history spans the Colonial Period, Westward movement, the American Revolution, the establishment of the United States, and corresponding Military History from 1742 to the present.
Intent: Empowerment of teachers to use the museum’s resources by providing knowledge, awareness, handouts, and materials to produce “make it and take it” products or concepts for classroom use. Examples and materials will be viewed in conjunction with three “Round Robin” presentations, provided by the Museum and selected speakers. The workshop will culminate in a “brainstorming idea session” to identify ends, ways, and means (strategy) of how to use the Museum resources to support teacher’s lesson plans and presentations.
Brainstorming ideas could include Field Trips to the Museum, with hands on activities (scavenger hunts); schedule Museum artifacts for classroom viewing, (actually or virtually); and conducting primary source research from materials in the Museum or copies made available, based on requests. Identify events that could qualify for Grant Funding the museum can request for use within the school system.
Registration is planned for 10-12 teachers per day. Please sign up by returning the returning the registration form to John Sayers at 8j9j17@gmail.com or by mail with preference of July 13 or July 14. Registration will close on 5 July. Teachers will earn seven (7) Continuing Education Credits (CEC). The 116th Infantry Regiment Foundation will furnish certificates of attendance.

Given:
- Museum resources, two work stations and scan/copy machines, exhibits/artifacts, your own technology tools (Smart Phones) etc., and time. Examples make photographs, videos, or scan and copy materials to make your “take it” product(s) for presentations
- And access to the Museum’s Media Artifacts including, but not limited to:
- The Museum’s digitalized “Living Histories” originally taped interviews with WWII, D-Day, 116th Infantry Regiment Veterans.
- The Museum’s CD selection of WWI and WWII Events and Documentaries.
- A copy of the book, Ever Forward! by Theodore G. Shuey, Jr.
- Provided during today’s – TWS 3 PE.
- The story of one of the nation’s oldest and most historic military units whose history is America’s History, the 116th Infantry Regiment (Brigade), America’s Stonewall Brigade, C: 1742 to present day.
- The Education Footlocker
- Standard: Discuss how these resources (media, etc.) can support SOLs and your classroom presentations during the “Review”.
3:30 – 4:00 Review – What went Right? What went Wrong?
- How to improve future teacher workshops in support of History SOL requirements.
